This bug was tagged moreinfo and is very old, with no further details,
so I am closing it.
In addition, a check of the current OpenOffice.org release does not
exhibit problems with - displayed as a rectangle. This could be
(indeed: is most likely) a font-related issue and if
I can answer my own question here...
