Chris, That was the problem. I had a set of files, fonts.dir, fonts.scale, etc in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType but there were no font files or symlinks to font files. After deleting these files in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType and doing a mkfontdir in that directory, which created an empty
