I had a similar experience some time ago, resulting in the message
init: no processes... like you. In my case it was a stupid
installation process, that left /etc/inittab empty :(
To investigate and solve the problem, I booted from a Knoppix CD,

I experienced very small fonts with gtk 1.2 programs, tested with GNOME.
Some experiments have shown that the font size depend on the LANG
environment variable, setting it to de_DE works but the installed
value [EMAIL PROTECTED] produces unreadable output.
I don't know if the LANG variable is set
