Oi, você colocou o gateway no /etc/network/interfaces ? Não tem nada a
ver se o roteador é um GNU/Linux, Windows, roteador cisco ou whatever,
contanto que realmente roteie :)

No Debian todos os servidores SMTP rodam como daemon, ter um servidor
SMTP gerenciado pelo inetd é uma péssima idéia, em qualquer Unix.
instale o servidor SMTP de sua preferência, (eu gosto do sendmail, o
