Further to my earlier problems, I broke down and bought some new discs
to try out - in case there was something wrong with the earlier batch.
No such luck. Here's what I got when I tried to format one of them:
root@transponder:/home/garydale# dvd+rw-format -format /dev/sr0

Hi Lou,
It looks like I got it. Reporting what I've done:
#update-alternatives --install
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so mozilla-javaplugin.so
/usr/lib/jvm/j2re1.7-oracle/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so 999
Now,
#update-alternatives --config mozilla-javaplugin.so
And choosing j2re1.7-oracle
FWIW, somewhere in the last five days, rkhunter started leaving full
logs again. It may have been after the last apt-get update/upgrade
pulled in some updates for clam, which I haven't really been doing
very much with.

Did the reboots occur before doing this?
I've reinstalled all simms.
DIMMs. SIMMs haven't been used for over a decade. But the fact you
mentioned SIMMs tells me you've been at this game a while.
The bios reports no ram

How can I get this program uninstalled?
First do
sudo killall bandwidthd
to make sure the daemon isn't running. Then edit /etc/init.d/bandwidthd
and add the line
exit 0
immediately after the first line (which should be #!/bin/sh). Then
remove and purge the package.
