PROBLEM FIXED! Here's what fixed it - I read a post somewhere about a
hardware mute for Thinkpads, which can be disabled by pressing on the
volume up button (not the software volume up, the physical volume up
button located next to the blue ThinkVantage button on the top of the
keyboard). I did it
I'm going to amalgamate all of your thoughts into a single email for
simplicity - not sure if that's correct protocol or not, so let me
know if it would be better if I replied to each email individually.

don't know why - last night I ran 'aptitude
safe-upgrade', maybe that has something to do with it? I'm not sure
how to fix this problem - I'm assuming that I should pare down some
files, but I'm not sure which ones or how to prevent this from
happening again. Any thoughts?
