had all sorts of problems with it.
It seems to me that either something got corrupted during
the upgrade, there is something left over from Sarge that
shouldn't be, or there is the wrong version of a library

Seems that the reason is that the system doesn't create

Firstly: Are you a part of the audio group? If not, that will make
everything cranky. You can fix this by adding yourself to the audio

As others have said, it sounds like the cards are not always getting
recognized in the same order, so sometimes your sound card is card 0 and
sometimes it is card 1. That used to happen to me once in a while, but
it hasn't lately.
In any event, you can verify that this is

Hello. I have a scanner, HP ScanJet 6200C. There's also a TV Card on my
computer (Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video
Capture), which I don't use. When I start xsane, as regular user, it only
allows me the choice of the Bt878 device, and not the HP ScanJet.
Thanks for the help - have fixed it. It was a combo of not having the
latest flash plugin (now fixed with flashplugin-nonfree) and adjusting
the /etc/iceweasel/iceweaselrc file as was suggested with reference to
Mozilla.
Now fixed, except for when the site requires something proprietary.

I changed the location line: report_location=CYYZ (I also tried lower
case). This too failed.
That's what I do to get my location. On first run I add the applet to the
panel to create that config file then remove it from the panel, change the
report location manually and add the applet

There are, I understand, problems that come up when you mix apt-get
with aptitude. Does switching to aptitude preclude using those
graphical tools? ... but update-notifier and synaptic are examples of
fantastic GUI programs that I would not want to give up.

Hello. I set up Skype, with a usb audio device, for the homeless in a
shelter that I work in. This is useful, because people can contact
family and/or friends whom they may otherwise not have been able to
contact. I set this up on Debian Etch.
However, I find the volume settings are
