I did exactly that several years ago with no problem.
I installed an amd64 kernel at which point grub knew about both.
Changed default boot to the new kernel and ran for a while. Once all
was well I uninstalled the pae kernel.
I did it mostly because I expect that amd64 is the dominant kernel
When I ran the update is replaced tzdata-java with 2015a-0wheezy1 and
nothing broke.

I always reboot after a kernel related upgrade on the

This allows to boot and get full rights to your system.

Just a reminder. fsck is responsible for applying the journal to
journaled filesystems. So you really do want it to run everytime.
This discussion should be about controlling the full fsck that
happens if requested or if the mount count or time exceeds it's
limit. These are all controlled

hand, I have been running LVM for years with /home, /tmp, /usr, /var and
swap all as LVM logical volumes and I have had no issues with it. What
sort of issues are you having and are you sure that they are caused by
having /usr on LVM?

Long ago, I decided that inconvenient fsck's were not what I
needed. And that cancelling them was not an option - I run quasi
headless so there's no way.
So - I use tune2fs to set a ridiculous reboot count for automatic
fsck. Then a run a cron job the does a reboot with the -F option once

the initial error about drives not being accessible,
but, as you said, that is just from deleted vms that I have not deleted
through virtualbox. I just need to delelete them from virtualbox to get
rid of that error. ReactOS is now booting correctly.

I found a simple workaround which lets me keep grub, I have no other
OS'es installed that would require a mount and scan of all partitions:
tail /etc/default/grub -n 3
#prevent hanging on mount scans
GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=true
solves the issue for me.
