I've been using Remind for years (maybe decades). It can handle all kinds
of repeating reminders, not just annual dates (ie birthdays and
anniversaries). Very versatile. It is a command line program, but comes
with TkRemind (a GUI front end). Best not to use the GUI for setting up
reminders,

try Thunderbird Calendar (Lightning):
there are probably better tools, but I have been using it for ages.
For reminders you can use various categories to show graphically, popups
if you like, and it is searchable for Historical uses.
I also have oldtimers disease, this helps.

With appropriate script it can "nag" me ;}

For the specific purpose of birthdays, I find gbirthday really straightforward
and effective.
I haven't succeeded in showing the last recent birthdays though...
