I have a dialup PPP provider. Everytime I open up Knews it wants to go to my
provider and retrieve the entire news
file (or at least I guess this is what it does). I already have a
.newsrc-new1.ibm.net file in my home directory that
Netscape and GNUS uses. Is there a way to have Knews use
Hello all,
I'm running 2.1 and KNews in ICEWM
When I go to post a new article or post a follow-up I get:
Ex/VI: Vi's stand input and output must be a terminal.
How do I set knews to use VI as a terminal?

Never Mind,
I found the answer on www.deja.com
You have to edit the Knews file in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/appdefaults
thanks anyway,

Whenever I launch Knews, it connects to my news server and downloads the list
of active newsgroups. This doesn't seem necessary, and takes several minutes.
What I would like is for only new groups to be checked.
Also, if I launch Knews w/o being connected to my ISP, I get 'error : no such

leafnode gathers the newsgroups I am interested in.
Knews looks to localhost and can read news wonderfully. No problem there.
But whenever I try to post or to forward news by mail I receive the error

From digging in the archives, I checked my hostname (gently) which
Greetings,
I currently use leafnode to periodically grab articles for the usenet
groups I am interested in for later reading off-line. I then use Knews
to read them and have knews configured to look to localhost (leafnode)
as its news server.
It had been a while since I had tried to post
Knews receives articles wonderfully.
However, whenever I try to reply to mail, I get the message
Domain name not available, posting will not be allowed!
Of course, there is a domain-name problem of some sort.
My domain-name should be something like mnsinc.com.
In the mail-user-agents

retrieveDescriptions:False
descriptionsFile:~/.knews/cache-%s/descriptions
fillNewsrcFile: True
but note that you will probably want to read the active
file and group descriptions at least

Can anyone explain to me in plain, simple english, what I

need to manually connect to my ISPs news server everytime I
start it, and it always tries to read every group. I looked

You will need to download the active file ONCE and can cache it afterwords.

Thanks to everyone who suggested knews. It is a very nice X based news
reader. I had a little trouble with the install though. Seemed dselect
wanted to write in /etc/news -- that did not exist and it would not
create it. Kept bombing out. So I created /etc/news and everything is
happy

How can I expand only the text of the news messages.
I run X in 640x480 until my new monitor comes in and the default message
space shows about 4 or 5 lines.
You can separate the text and article list
When I launch knews, it gives an error message:
Couldn't determine domain name. Posting will not be allowed.
I have a stand-alone PC, dialing up to my ISP with PPP.
My NNTP server is leafnode.
Documentation lacks.
What do I miss?

Hi,
I have just upgraded to knews-0.9.8-5.deb. Since the upgrade, knews
always tries to connect to my ISP at startup. This did not happen before.
Have I missed out on something and where can I change its behaviour?
Cheers,
Ralf
