You want a console shell? Try the keys: Ctl-Alt-F(1-6) This will get you to a tty virtual console, where you can login. The first virtual console Ctl-Alt-F1 is probably busy running x (maybe not, if you use xdm). The others will give a login prompt. If you want back to X, it's Ctl-Alt-F7...
