hidden files everywhere

Back in the good old days of Etch, when I needed to edit a hidden file, I sometimes would open it with gedit by using Ctrl-L, and then obtain the file, and open it. I did this after upgrading to Lenny, and now find that every single application, always, shows every file, be it hidden or not. Or,
