Everything boots up fine, works fine, except get a load of ipchains: protocal
not available.
Now, I was not aware I even used this, the /etc/default/ipchains says no.
Is it now absent in the kernel, deprecated so get rid of the init.d script?

Ditt problem är rätt vanligt, men till att börja med skall jag
förtydliga att detta inte är ipchains utan netfilter som

Tratándose de firewall/seguridad no es bueno usar herramientas
obsoletas.

Mudei do Windows para o Linux (Debian 3.0 kernel
2.2-20) há alguns meses e não consigo instalar o
Ipchains. Já tentei os seguintes comandos:
1- modprobe ipchains ; o sistema me respondeu que nao
era possível encontrar tal modulo.
2- lsmod ; não encontrei o ipchains
Se vc instalou o debian com o kernel 2.2.x ele já vem com o ipchains
instalado e carregado mesmo, por isso o apt disse que já estava lá.
O problema deve ser na regra que vc fez mesmo, tente especificar apenas um
protocolo (tcp por exemplo) e ve se a regra funciona.
Nunca mexi com ipchains, só com
os comandos moprobe e lsmod eh obvio que nao vai funcionar... lspci para ver
o hardware que tem e o modprobe eh basicamente para a instalacao de algum
driver...

Tenho um Debian 3.0r1 instalado em uma maquina com um kernel recompilado por
mim, versao 2.4.21. O problema eh que quando tento usar o IPCHAINS ele me
responde:
ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel
No caso do IPTABLES:

Esse problema eu ja resolvi! :)
Li no google e mensagens diziam que o IPCHAINS nao era mais usado com kernel
da seris 2.4.x, mas era pra usar o IPTABLES no lugar.
O IPTABLES faltava uma coisa no meu kernel (nao era problema de modulo) e
tambem ja resolvi. Porem, tenho o seguinte problema agora

Hello, I am new to the linux game and am running into some difficulty. I cannot get ipchains, iptables, or ipfwadm to work. All three give me errors that say something is missing in the kernel. Such that
ipfwadm -- Generic IP Firewall Chains not in this Kernel

Creo que los kernels/nucleos actuales usan iptables. Tienes un buen
manual de introducción aquí
con
ipchains -A input -p TCP -s -d www -j REDIRECT 3128
redirijo lo que entre al puerto 80 al 3128
ipchains -A input -p TCP -s 192.168.1.0/255.255.225.0 -d !
192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 www -j REDIRECT 3128
