Yuk, I went through that ordeal a few months back. Off of the top of my
head I had to do this:
1) Compile a new kernel without initrd. (I would have done this anyway
because I have a fixed-frequency monitor so I want framebuffer as early as

I have a machine that was set up some time ago when SATA, RAID and kernel
2.6 was a slightly exciting thing to do.
It has been running kernel 2.6.7 for a very long time, because any attempt
to upgrade to a later kernel failed because in 2.6.7 the original IDE_SATA
