I had this problem before too, and /etc/inittav just
confused me, so I used update-rc.d -f [gxk]dm
remove, it basically remove the [gxk]dm in the

The first time I ran it I just got a blue screen with mouse pointer.
Now when I boot my machine, I get a xWindows login prompt.
I can't get to a bash prompt to fix my xWindows config.
If I try ctrl+alt+backspace it takes me back to a xWindows login

I booted up with cdrom, went into rescue mode, mounted my hard drive,
dumped into a shell, and deleted my XF86Config file.
I found out why my XWindows was not working, I put /dev/tty0 instead
of ttyS0 for my mouse.

i setup 12 machines with i810
for machines that did not have X support for X out of the box i just
replaced the XF86_SVGA binary. however on potato there is X support for
i810 but you need the kernel driver which i dont think comes with potato
..the first time i seutp 810 on potato it took many

Afterstep as windows manager, when left click a menu appears, with
Debian gray, no links from there.
System done from frozen bootfloppies, dselect+apt-get
Several applications are installed, but none shows up. There is no even
xterm, or eterm (which I installed)

I got my Xwindows going with functioning mouse, the only problem is that
I don't have any applications accessible from there, even xterm isn't
there! I suposse that it hapenned because I installed all the
applications first, and then only my Xsystem. How do I make them visible
from there?

Try this.
vim ~/.xinitrc
add the following line
exec window manager you want to use
save it then startx

Desktop icons are not part of window managers, but they are part of
environments, such as KDE or Gnome, so if you're looking for desktop
icons, that's the direction to look.

Hello Debian Users,
I am a newbie to Linux and I loaded a workstation with Debian Linux
- Potato recently. When I try to start Xwindows with the startx command
I get the following error
xinit: No such file or directory (errno2); no server X in PATH
Use the -- option, or make sure that /usr
(which only tells you one problem at a time).
