Re: AMD 64 DVD Installer for Debian Lenny Hangs

2007-05-10 Thread Redefined Horizons

Doug,

I did not respond to the Debian-Boot mailing list. I will do that now.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I was able to figure out how to get over my installation problem. I
had to use the pci=off boot option. Once I did this I had no more
 installation problems.

did tell me that the problem was with the Linux kernel, not with the
installer for Debian. I still haven't figured out what part of my

I would like to post the information on my fix somewhere for other
users that might run into the same problem. I looked at the Debian
Wiki, but it didn't seem to be the appropriate place.

Can anyone make a suggestion of a good home for this type of information?

You may have found it. Your message, and this reply, will stay on the
lists.debian.org archives and be accessible via google.

Did you let the debian-boot people know that their suggestion worked?
Its generally a good idea to reply to the same thread so that when
someone searches the archives with the same problem they see both the
suggestion and the successful result.

Doug.

not sure its the same system as yours as you dont give much info but try
booting the intaller in expert mode and use the boot paramaters
mentioned here.

While not an expert at all, I do feel comfortable saying that you should
be able to get Debian on the machine. I would suggest Etch initially
(changing up to Lenny is easy), unless there is something found in Lenny
that you need for the installation.

What do you know about the Dell? MB? Controllers? Have you checked for
compatibility issues others installing Linux (not necessarily Debian)
may have had with these components (esp. the MB)? Have you tried an
Ubuntu (or other) live cd to see how it fares?

My own issues with my recent install led to finding out what boot
options had to be included to get around a MB not fully supported at
this time. You may have similar ones.

The message you see involves the kernel setting up a scheduler
internally. My gut tells me that that is not the source of the problem,
but just the point things get to as something underneath is coming into
play...

HTH,

Kenward

If you don't get anything useful here you might try debian-boot list.
You should search the archives anyway.

Will I be able to install Debian on my system?

Probably. Even if the normal method fails, there are many other options.

Andrei

If you submit an installation report (from the install manual), it goes
via the bug tracking to debian-boot. They were very helpful when I got
a bleeding-edge box and needed to use Etch a while before it froze. I
guess my box at that point was bleeding-etch.

Good luck,

Doug.
