I'm running Debian Testing, and i've got 1280x800_85 Hz!
You have to download driver Mageia Cauldron for i586 from

Of course, you have to edit xorg.conf by changing from vesa to
sisimedia ;)

I think that during the upgrade of xorg-server to version 1.14.5, the graphic
terminals switched from terminfo application mode to cursor mode (I'm not
sure of the terminology).
