I got the latest linux-source 2.6.32 from sid and rebuilt my kernel. I
removed my /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf which had options radeon
modeset=0. I can boot with the kernel and X seems to be fine. When I
look in Xorg.0.log I see the following line:

I set modeset=1 explicitly. It still said modesetting isn't supported
in the Xorg.0.log. I got linux-image-2.6.32-5-686-bigmen from sid
(2.6.32-24) and rebooted and KMS worked. I did get 4 or 5 error
messages first thing in the boot messages at the top of the screen. I
couldn't write them all

You need DRM kernel drivers from 2.6.33 or later since you need the
radeon KMS driver. That's what Debian's linux-image-2.6.32-5-$arch
contains (and even more fixes that came after 2.6.33).

There are no kernel-sources 2.6.32 in sid which Brice says I need. I
don't really want to go into experimental. I build my own kernels from
source in order to get the modules I need. Turning off KMS works fine
with 2.6.32 kernels.

No. Brice told you the package name you're looking for, and they've
been in sid for weeks. When he talked about 2.6.33 or later stuff,
