Not saying this is your problem - but... If
you have applied the KB 893066 patch from the latest round of MS Patches you
may want to look into that. We have seen substantial issues
tell you the battle with this patch we had
was not very fun...

200 spool files to 1000 during the day and then 2 days later there are all of
those left over files.
