Hi all,

Anyone has experiences using a ramdrive for all declude exe, config and filter files?

Since declude/spamchk are all CPU and network intensive, I doubt that would
have a very noticeable effect.

I have some big filters and see very little disk access.

I don't think it would help.

Markus,

Interesting idea. A quick search of Google turned up some of the same
suspicious types :)

The following product looks like it might work well. It goes up to 4GB
and has an auto-save feature.

I've never tried this stuff though, so I can't really comment on how it
works. Stability would seem to be paramount.

filter files?
It wouldn't help very much. The main reason is caching -- Windows will
automatically cache frequently used files, so all of those files should be
in memory already.

If the spool directory was on a RAM drive, though, it could speed things up
quite a bit (the RFCs say this is not allowed, though), as the information
constantly changes.

Frederick -

I suggest you try the new feature in the latest intrim release
that has these commands avail:
SKIPIFWEIGHT and MAXWEIGHT

Place your compensatory filters [ones that reduce scoring] in the
global config ahead of the other filter files.

For me frankly most of my filters do not even now run - the dns tests
take care of the load so cpu use is way down

Why would the RFCs care where the spool is? Performance wise, that would be
a great use if you had the funds.

Some ramdrives autosave at configurable intervals. I see this as not
being that much worse than enabling caching on a hard drive or array,
although it probably doesn't make much sense unless you are pushing the
capacity of your server.

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] improved performance using ramdrive?

2003-11-26 Thread Colbeck, Andrew
Agreed. It would take a heavily loaded server to show any difference in
processing speed; much the same rationale as using different disk arrays to
separate data, spool, logs, and swap on a heavily loaded server.

I originally tried the RAMdisk on the aforementioned database because I was
skeptical that the NT OS was making good decisions about what to cache.

Currently, I haven't used a RAMdisk anywhere; the current Windows OS
flavours and fat Compaq RAID controllers have been good enough.
