A cat /proc/cpuinfo and the relevant parts of dmesg probably wouldn't hurt. Just a wild shot in the dark, but might it be a hyperthreading- issue? If you haven't got anything else to do, see if you have hyperthreading enabled in BIOS and if so if it can be disabled. -- gnome system monitor show

The xchat-gnome desktop uses Icon=xchat-gnome and xchat-gnome-common ships an /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/xchat-gnome.png, all the themes should fallback to hicolor and that works fine on my gutsy installation using the Human theme, to debug by somebody getting the issue -- Icon missing
