I just had the error popup on my desktop...I was using file-roller to make a
.7z archive and as others have said it make the archive just fine until it

yes I did not have to even open a file with file-roller , just invoking
it from terminal sudo file-roller %u causes the problem to occur ,
again the permissions of / are being changed to 700 . logging in as root
and running chmod 755 / restores the system .

those crashes are likely the same issue, the stacktrace are not really
informative but having a valgrind log would be useful

This bug has a low priority, and it has been going for quite some

From SystemPreferencesKeyboard, I chose Macbook Pro, and then this bug
report popped up:

It can happen under various circumstances:

- a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)

Confirmed on Ubuntu 8.04 32 bit.
Also affects Debian Lenny.
Since this also affects EOG (on both distros)
my best guess is this a libtiff problem.
