i tried to use thunar as default file manager and it worked. but
nautilus always seems to be the default when browsing to removable drive
such as flash drive, though i have set the default file manager to be
thundar.

Okay, can you try to quit f-spot, and whilst it's hung, run mono --wapi=hps
in a console? Paste the output from that
command.

I spy something unexpected.
Can you run beagle-shutdown, check that BeagleDaemon.exe and
IndexHelper.exe are not running, then try f-spot again?
