I have just installed the 8.10 and Nautilus can easily access samba
shares on other Ubuntu, but fails to display old Samba 2.2.8 shares (we
run it on old Slack 7 in our work place). It connects without errors,
but then display nothing.

I'm not sure, if cheese needs libv4l, but if it doesn't work with anyone
of the apps, than it's a problem with the integrated drivers of webcam
(gspca) in the kernel.
Are you able to compile gspca-source? Try, if that works...

Does not seem to work... even though I think I could erase a cd-rw with

That is exactly the problem in fact. If you run dpkg-reconfigure debconf -p low
and select text mode and priority low, followed by dpkg-reconfigure -ap low you
will get configuration questions of the type: use: 1. unix authentication 2.
consolekit 3. likewise 4. ... The choices
Works for me! Changing this to 'committed' because it'll be fixed when
8.10 is out. If this is wrong, please correct me - I'm not too familiar
with Launchpad.
