Well now - this is interesting, I didn't know how to switch Compiz off
so I went there and under 'General' I returned everything to default -
that didn't help. By chance I then went to System/Preferences/Appearance
Preferences/Visual effects and nothing there was selected, I selected

I believe I've narrowed the cause of the crash down to the File Transfer
Window activating (Alt +F), manually or automatic, initiates the crash
of the entire application on a consistent basis. Compiz has no effect
as it crashes with Metacity Window Manager as well.

Running Hardy (8.04) and problem still exists for me.
Thankfully, the solution of editing
/system/storage/volumes/_org_freedesktop_Hal_devices_... and deleting
the stuff worked.
Note: I actually had a slightly different problem than the original bug
report - I put the wrong mount options.

I rip all my DVD's into MKV, so I have a huge movie collection in a
folder. (X264 vide with vorbis audi in MKV container)
Ubuntu by default is not able to build thumbnails for my videos ; I have
totem icon for each file.

1) Whenever you hibernate, save a copy of the grub menu.lst to a backup location
2) Change menu.lst to boot the currently running kernel by default, with a
label simply reading Resume from Hibernation.

On install, check to see if it failed. It did. Boot in rescue mode
select root command line
sudo apt-get remove comp;iz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core
This fixed the problem for me. Thanks Jerry and all for finding a
solution to the gnome hang upon login problem!
