A whole year later, and this is still not fixed. I would just switch
from using the whole drive to a partition that fills the whole drive,

entries, gconf-editor is something for power users, those who need it

that's true. It's a lot less complicated than I described: opening 2 files
with eog on the same screen has the same effect.
