i've had the same issue (jaunty xubuntu fresh installation with intel video
card).
it seems like paul's solution:
sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove
sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults
works perfect.
later after playing with gdm and configuration autologin stopped working again
and this helped

I took a rootfs with GNOME I had prepared for Babbage 2 which was
working fine there, moved that to Babbage 1; it's on a SATA disk which I
plug via an USB adapter. I could boot this using the new RedBoot
attached to this bug report (candidate 200925 I guess) and it would
trigger the described
@kikl: the trash bin is not the same as an undo. Even if it provides the
same functionality, it is by far much more complex to use than a single
key-press (Ctrl-z).
Also last time I checked the trash bin didn't have a way to restore
files to the same place they were deleted (like Windows trash
