I went back and took a closer look. Indeed my wife had set a custom
background. I set it to use the theme default and the blur/gradient
problem went away. However, a new problem showed. When I made the
change, I got a rectangle that was not painted in the panel - see new
screen-shot - of lower

However, I'm not sure which package is to blame, as I successfully can
run that command form a launcher in the panel. So maybe gnome-settings-

I am using 10.10 too and had a contact failure in the cable between my laptop
and my charger which seemd like the AC adapter was disconnected and connected
back very rapidly and very frequently. I've fixed the cable but still, every
time I unplug and plug back the AC adapter

I also realize that a workaround for this is to change
disable_lock_screen to true in the gconf-editor, but this still does
not solve the problem.

I like totem but it's really annoying that it can never load the ass subtitles
rightly.
Even the built-in subtitles in mov which can't be loaded by both vlc and
mplayer can be handle perfectly,why totem refuses to load ass,though it claim
