On my system (upgrade from natty) this happens in gnome-shell, but not
in unity3d.
In gnome-shell it even happens when explicitly specifying --hide-menubar
on the command line. So it doesn't look like messed-up settings to me,
just that this setting is being ignored.

OK. I found the solution.
While upgrading from 10.04 there was an error that has stopped installation
before it configured and cleared old setup.
I have downloaded 10.11 image and upgraded system from USB. That repaired
broken configuration.
Some programs were lost during upgrade. Chromium in

Well, the menu bar doesn't show in Unity3D for me either, but that's because
the global menu takes over the menu bar. I see no menu bar in Unity3D even when
the settings is set to *show* the menu bar, which in my opinion is a bug in
itself (since I think the global menu is a huge bug...).
Should this bug be closed, since the theme switcher in Oneiric doesn't
show screenshots?

Update to previously written findings:
Empathy starts ok (occasionally with wrong notification Password
required, see bug #840875) but skype doesn't start ever. When I have
tried some zenity dialogs into script, they didn't show, but empathy has
started:

Upon starting up 11.10, if the first move made is to open the Home
Folder and then click Downloads from the sidebar, nautilus crashes.
Only clicking Downloads from the list of folders will open it from the
Home Folder.

Hi! With Oneric updated to today and proposed repositories enabled, I
can't enabled the subtitle plugin.
Steps:
1. Open Totem.
2. Menu: Edit / Plugins
3. Enable the subtitles downloader Error, you can't enabled it!
