I was finally able to get the browser approach to work (advice: there is
a little slider at the very top of the gnome-extensions-app GUI that you
have to click to get the extensions to activate, or else you begin to
lose your mind thinking that you have to install it manually from source
because
Worked for me, though I also needed gnome-shell-extension-prefs/lunar-
proposed as well as the previous version was removed when I installed
mutter/lunar-proposed and gnome-shell/lunar-proposed.

I noticed this bizarre issue a few days ago and therefore reinstalled the 23.04

Thumbnails do not show in the file chooser (provided by gtk4 which is also used
by even non-GTK3 apps if they use xdg-desktop-portal-gnome) until the thumbnail
is generated by for instance, viewing the folder in Nautilus.
