SOLUTION
I was able to trace down the problem to libc6_2.6.1-1ubuntu10_amd64.deb
(ld-linux-x86-64.so.2).
I was able to correct the problem by downloading
libc6_2.6.1-1ubuntu9_amd64.deb, installing it via dpkg, and then doing a full
system upgrade via apt-get upgrade
I was able to trace down the problem to libc6_2.6.1-1ubuntu10_amd64.deb

I had this problem too since last update.
If you need a terminal you could also install konsole (the kde console tool):
it works for me (yet you have to install kde deps packages which may not be a
viable option for you, if the machine you're using is a server and/or you want
to keep it
