Richard, this bug still bothers me every damn day. But, as you say, the
reaction is a joke. I don't expect this to ever be fixed, as Gnome 2 is
being deprecated (and with it my use of Gnome, FWIW).

Too true. As stated in the description, a higher number of icons works
fine. It seems to be at three or less that I run into problems.

OK, after playing around a bit more, I've realized the problem is not
with the trash. I've updated the description and summary.
To reproduce the bug,
Install Gnome-Do
Set theme to Docky
Make sure auto-hide on the Gnome-Do dock is off
Try dragging any file or folder from anywhere in Nautilus into
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: nautilus
Using Jaunty Beta, nothing happens when dragging a file to the trash can
on the desktop. The icon remains on the desktop or in the nautilus
window where it started, and nothing goes into the trash.

I'm having the same problem. I'll have to use something else until this
bug is fixed, because as it stands I can't use it to view and rotate
pictures from my digital camera. As this is the default picture viewer
in Ubuntu, should this be high importance?
