Since I can't open the print dialog directly from a terminal I ran
evince for which i also installed debug symbols.
The printserver with the system default printer was offline.
I believe this is the valuable debug info:

This is quite a huge log. Things get interesting when connect returns -1
EHOSTUNREACH (No route to host) - line 9068.

I use a laptop on two main sites. On both sites there's a printserver.
Whenever I want to print something and the default printer (actually the
host it's attached to) isn't available, the printing UI freezes until

I can confirm this behaviour. I have random corruption which looks like
keyframes being completely skipped. This happens on two separate
installs and if I remember correctly, it has been happening since around
the time I upgraded from gutsy to hardy.
Mplayer plays files back without this
