My Ubuntu 15.04 VM (running under VMware) doesn't boot anymore after
permanently switching to systemd.
I've switched to systemd with apt install systemd-sysv --purge (it only
purged the upstart package) and with the default Ubuntu entry the boot fails
after about 2.5 sec
I don't remember seeing this problem recently anymore. I'm using oneiric
with unity-2d (which uses metacity) so I guess this bug is fixed now.

I'm not sure if it's gdm fault, but given the keyboard layout problems after
login in the past, I assume so.
My keyboard configuration in /etc/default/console-setup is:

XKBLAYOUT=de
XKBVARIANT=nodeadkeys
I've checked this right now (de-activated auto-login and restarted gdm) and the
same happens after login: I've got a german keyboard but with dead keys.
Reseting the layout in gnome-keyboard-properties brings back the nodeadkeys
variant.
This is cumbersome as I use the terminal much and ~ is

Yes, I still have the problem with 8.10 (didn't upgrade to 9.04 yet).
This is with pure ALSA, no PulseAudio installed. I've to use gnome-
sound-properties to switch between analog output (my headset) or digital

I had the same problem and the update from hardy-proposed moved the
start link and the error message is gone.
