Anyway, there are multiple gtk related applications crashing so probably
not related to lightdm directly. For example the apport-collect that
crashes at some point, or if I open menus in GNOME Terminal or create a
new tab.

to raring soon, backport for quantal sounds like a good idea. If you

Happens from time to time, I notice it by my laptop's fans starting to
be audible. Indeed the process seems to be owned by lightdm, but I
haven't seen anything that clearly reproduces it - possibly switching
between users / logging out/in instead of single user mode or rebooting.
