This bug is indeed quite annoying. I have built a version using the upstream
patch from http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=516714 available in my ppa:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~atreju-tauschinsky/+archive/ppa/
That version works fine for me, maybe someone else can test it as well

So if I want to switch back and force between compiz and metacity
without losing the settings made in compizconfig-settings-manager, the
only option I have is to install simple-ccsm? Or is there another way to
turn compiz back on and keep the settings?

Advanced Desktop Effects Settings
Hello!
the behaviour described above has disappeard without me knowingly doing
anything.
at the time it was reproducible insofar as moving the panel around always had
the effect described above. As far as I remember it started when the laptop was

Public bug reported:
My desktop is strangely shifted to the right side of the screen, leaving
an inaccessible space on the left. There is an panel on the left which
just leaves a blank space when removed. The screenshots should explain
this better than I can.
Usually the panel is on the left.

Attached the document I was working on - I removed all actual content
but don't believe this influences the crash.
Furthermore: I'm already waiting for the next crash to run gdb on it...
