It says above that this bug was fixed in gnome-control-center
1:3.6.3-0ubuntu31 but I cleanly installed Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 today with
gnome-control-center 1:3.8.3-0ubuntu1~saucy2 and it still crashes as
soon as I try to change the background. I see the following segfault
each time in my syslog:
Tim, in the process of doing that I discovered that this problem seems
to be not directly due to gnome-control-center so I won't raise a bug on
the crash. I will append a comment on my Ubuntu GNOME list post which
presumably is what pointed you here.

I am running Oneiric x32 with nvidia driver and also get this problem
when I enable xorg-edgers ppa. Purging that ppa removes the problem.
Does not happen on my intel video laptop with same ppa enabled so seems
xorg-edgers + nvidia (290.06) related?
System monitor lock up is repeatable but other
Not sure if helpful but further to my above comment I find that gnome-
system-monitor locks up in a futex() call:
stat64(/proc/2426, {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0555, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
stat64(/proc/2427, {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0555, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
stat64(/proc/2500, {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0555, st_size=0,
For gnome-shell users that want a workaround for this bug but want to
preserve global menus in Unity then perhaps a better solution is to
create a file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/81ubuntu-menu-proxy with the single
line content:
[ $DESKTOP_SESSION != ubuntu ] unset UBUNTU_MENUPROXY

@Konstantinos I have been using your ppa packages for ages to fix this
bug on Lucid. Did a clean install to Maverick this week and shocked to
see this bug still exists. However applying your ppa does not fix this
bug on Maverick for me.
The ubuntu development process is failing. This bug and
@ Konstantinos, Ubuntu updated gnome-panel to 1:2.30.2-0ubuntu0.2 a few
days ago which has overwritten your last fixed ppa package
1:2.30.2-0ubuntu0.2~ppa1. So this bug has returned until you provide
another update.

Sabastien, are you saying that my comments about this same bug are not
appropriate here because I use KDE? I'm not familiar with the ubuntu bug
process but should I really have to raise another bug with exactly the
same title and description but assigned to a different ubuntu package?

Not sure if you are asking me Sebastien but I am running Kubuntu Hardy.
The Compiz Desktop Effects window pops up from the KDE System/Desktop
Effects menu. Seems like exactly the same bug though?

Setting Visual effects to None is ignored when logging in again
I can confirm this bug.
I'm running Kubuntu Hardy and I can change System/Desktop Effects to
None and it turn Compiz off for the rest of that session but Compiz
comes back after next reboot.

but boy it is buggy, at least on
Oops. Sorry about not getting back to you.
I completed several gaming sessions over the past several weeks and
could not reproduce the error. I will retain your email in case it
happens again. I will try to capture a detailed error report.

Thanks for the quick followup. Please excuse me if my object naming
convention is rough, I'm new to Ubuntu.
I was playing the game AisleRiot Solitare Spider. I actually won a game.
At the end the gane the Spider window froze. I could not access the menus of

I'll try over the next couple of days and let you know. It's kinda hard
to win regularly.

Does it happen every time you win a game? Could you open the system
monitor dialog and look if something is using lot of CPU or memory when
that happens?
