I observe the same problem running Gutsy-Xubuntu although here it's said there
is a fix.
Anything I can do about it, or anything I can do to help that you can do
something?

gnumeric (1.7.90-1ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low
* Merge from Debian unstable. Remaining Ubuntu changes:
- debian/control, debian/*-gtk-*, debian/rules,
debian/shlibs.local: Xubuntu changes for
gtk/gnome multibuild.
- run intltool-update in po*
- Build Depend on intltool
I could reproduce and will attach the backtrace and report upstream.
