seems to be http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=488507 and should
be fixed in intrepid, I'm closing the bug now, feel free to reopen if
you still get the bug there though

OK. I'll report this upstream too, but until then I'll dump here all my
diagnostics.
I'm attaching an strace done with strace -fT -e trace=stat64,time gedit
stracing-gedit. Backtrace next.

(The strace is zipped because it's 3.8 MB. Repetitive, though.)
Next I tried to do a backtrace of one of the funny 'time' calls. The
backtrace is done using gedit-dbgsym 2.22.1-0ubuntu1 (There's a slightly
newer version in the repositories, but I've no debug packages for that
one, and the
does moving the recently-used file makes gedit start faster on your
configuration? the new GTK version in intrepid has code to limit the
number of entries stored in the recently used list now so the issue
might be fixed there

gedit is ridiculously slow (and does too much work)
OK, so my problem is certainly caused by that file.
http://www.google.com/search?q=.recently-used.xbel shows a lot of talk
about it (including on Ubuntu forums) and nothing but work-arounds.

You
thank you for your bug report, I don't get really get the issue on my
hardy installation, on a not really recent box gedit takes around 1
second to start. the issue is not likely distribution specific and the
ubuntu desktop team doesn't have the ressources to work on such
optimisation, but maybe
Hello Sebastien,
Hmm, it's strange you're not seeing this. I seem to remember Gedit being
slow on all four or so boxes I've had Ubuntu on. I've never tried it on
another distro, though.
I don't think it's a straight optimization issue; the excessive system
calls I've seen seem clearly wrong, not
running gedit on a i386 hardy installation
$ strace -c -f gedit
Process 8242 detached
% time seconds usecs/call callserrors syscall

do you use some plugins in gedit? there is nobody looking specifically
to gedit in ubuntu, the upstream maintainers are busy but reply
sometimes in bugzilla or on IRC though
