My problem appears to be related to pulseaudio...
The installation is a dist-upgrade from Dapper, there may be something
missing in my configuration that a clean Hardy install has set up.
The workaround for my problem was to go to:
System - Preferences - Sound
and change all the playback sinks
the new comment is likely an issue due to flash in the webbrowser

I have the same problem.
When I opened Rhythmbox to play a file, it appeared as though the file
would play (the play button was depressed), but the time bar never
moved. It's not that I can't hear anything, it's that the program is not
playing anything.

rithmbox start to work. So I open again some of the same www-pages but
i can't reproduce the problem.

1. Run rhythmbox in a terminal (Applications - Accessories - Terminal, and
then type rhythmbox), then paste all output in to this bug report
