I am experiencing the same, or very similar, problems and I can confirm that:
$ gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///home//Photos/2007/08/13/mvi_0542.avi
produces slow playback as well.
The command line output from gst-launch is:
Setting pipeline to PAUSED ...
Pipeline is PREROLLING ...

correctly? does changing the system, preferences, sounds, music and
video option to alsa makes a difference?

I confirm this bug with the same linux version/distribution and would
like to add that this also happens in other applications -- like
watching videos from youtube. Maybe totem and flash use the same code to
show videos, because this problem doesn't happen in mplayer. Note:
