Run the "fsck" command on your harddrive, it if starts spewing out lots of error like mine did, copy important data from HD, throw away, buy new, reinstall. This is apparently an oddity that never happens if the installation went fine on a clean harddrive -- Upgrade from 8.04 -> 8.10 failed (bad
