since upstream rejected the feature request doing the same with the
distribution task, that should be argued upstream if somebody doesn't
agree, we are not likely to make the GTK behaviour distro specific
** Bug watch removed: GNOME Bug Tracker #317640
Kde has the same behaviour, and it had it for years. I still can't understand
why the bug was instantly flagged as rejected.
It's a very basic and essential feature missing from nautilus, why it can't
even be consedered is out of my mind.

As described before the feature conflict and people might find either annoying.
Take the previous example:
- temp
- tip
- ttexample
t should select the first item, ie: temp, a repetition should select
ttexample. Then an another pression on it ... why should it unselect and
start cycling on
Might there be a choice to add this in a different way, like holding
down the shift-key (or the ctrl-key) while pressing t will cycle between
the names?

The behaviour it's the same as in kde, and windows. I've tried tio explain it
but after one month you don't even consider possible a feature which is working
for the rest of the world for years. It took one sec to try it on kde.
If you type fast it matches more letter, if it's slow enough or the
you don't even consider possible a feature where did you figure
that? I don't try to use KDE so I try to get clear explanation of what
you want before forwarding that bug upstream. If you want to talk
directly to people working on the software, which is the fast way, you
may want to consider
don't use KDE rather

That's known upstream and is due to GTK:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=317640
** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: nautilus = gtk+2.0
Binarypackagename: nautilus = None
Severity: Normal = Wishlist
Status: Unconfirmed = Confirmed
** Bug watch added: GNOME
Upstream rejected the idea of that feature on
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=320177, I've pointed that on
the other page and that Ubuntu bug about it

Ok, sorry about the fuss. I disagree tho, it's a missing feature to me.
The given reason is just a personal taste.

Switch to tip. Then if you press again it should switch to ttexample and then
again to temp. If you keep it pressed, it should cycle indefinitely between
those 3 items.
If different letters are pressed i.e. t then i it should select tip.
Thanks for your interest ;)

If t is pressed twice, then e is pressed before a proper timeout, it should
select ttexample

The issue is that you have a directory with:
- temp
- tip
- ttexample
What should the second press on t do? Select ttexample? or switch to tip?
Matching several chars is also a great feature ...
