The applet is back on my panel but I'll give some information. Before an update yesterday, I was able to see the applet simply by using the 2.6.27-7-generic kernel (intrepid). However, it wasn't here after a reboot with the jaunty kernel. Maybe the issue was caused by my hardware : an intel

I read the ~/.xsession-errors but nothing concerning the mixer-applet. Since I don't know how to use gdb, could you tell me how to do it ? I tried to figure out the command-line to show the applets-dialog, and I found the panel-test-applets. When clicking on Execute with the applet
