Just noticed that this is a dup of bug 347538, will mark it as such. I
still think the current behavior is not intuitive: if the indicator
applet is invisible, I cannot even remove it from the panel, because
I'm experiencing it as well. When the applet is inactive, there is no
icon to indicate position, or that it's even on. When moving the window
list panel application around, it will run up against it and compresses
the window list icons - as they should and do when running into any
other panel
And here if I move it a little further to the right, so it get's
compressed even more.

Here there's a window list that is compressed because to the right of it
there is an indicator applet that is completely invisible. That's kind
of confusing.
