Same problem, I have a Toshiba A75.
And don't work for me ¨compiz --replace¨.
I re-installed the system but have the same problem.

I'm having the same problem. I'm running Karmic Alpha 3 on a Vaio T-130.
The effects worked fine after install. In the Appearance I deactivated
the effects and now can't activate them anymore, at least not through
the Appearance dialog.
Like Asif and Jeremy I can get the effects back running
Same. Trying to enable compiz via System/Preferences/Appearance results
in a X restart. Forcing compiz via 'compiz --replace' works.
9.10 up-to-date, Radeon X1250. I am not sure when it started (one week
ago?); to get things back to working state under metacity I was still
forced to 'metacity
I have the same problem, with an nvidia graphics card. Running compiz
--replace works for me though as well.
