But after doing the above, reinstalling GDM Ubuntu-desktop, as
suggested, DID work.

Desktop Bugs,
For me Simon's fix worked fine except for the icons, I had to use this
line to restore my icons, and I'm not at all sure why this is different
for me b/c we are all running Karmic here I would think but anyways...
sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 -t string -s /desktop/gnome/interface/icon_theme
what's the difference to

this one marked as duplicate of the other one ? Or at least on part
could be seperated in the other bug report or ?

Simon, your reverting way worked for me beside the fact that I thought
there would be another icon in the default install.
