Upstream closed the bug with that comment:
We won't add this checkbox back. You can choose to automatically save on
logout, or use gnome-session-properties which now have a button to save the
current session.

Thanks for your bug. It's somewhat similar to bug #44010 and has been
described several time to the differents new session dialog sucks bugs
sent, I'm marking the distro task as rejected since that's already
mentionned by some other bugs, feel free to reopen if you disagree

Thank you for the detailed response. I am reopening this, because the UI
includes an enabled option Ask on Logout which does nothing. If the
solution is to remove that option for now, that is fine by me.
