Title:
Rhythmbox tray behaviour doesn't make sense
To
That was completely stupid design decision.
Wasn't it much better just to show non technical users that there is a second
button on their mice and Oh, wow, we have cool another button that shows
context menu instead making _that_annoying_ usability disimprovement?

Rhythmbox tray behaviour
If I was too stupid to use more than one mouse button I'd be using a
Mac. Ubuntu impressed me to the point of completely switching over from
Windows, but this last version is almost as bad as any Microsoft
product. Can anyone recommend another Linux distro that is thought out
for people who do not
@Adrian: Thanks for the tip! I find the only-left-click thing extremely
annoying and am happy to be reverting to the old way.

Actually never mind, that fix didn't stay working! After I closed RB and
opened it again later it reverted to the newer behaviour.
Maybe this should be a setting in the preferences or in the GNOME
configuration editor? A checkbox for Keep old-style Rhythmbox tray icon
behaviour or something like
Adrian's right - left click should show and hide, right click should
show menu with additional options like other apps. Also, Show
Rhythmbox still appears when it is shown, and should be hide - you have
to click the X.
Additionally, this wrong behaviour also happens in Transmission when
tray is
You can get the latest source of the original Rhythmbox here:
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/rhythmbox/0.12/rhythmbox-0.12.8.tar.bz2
Unpack it somewhere, then:
sudo apt-get build-dep rhythmbox
and you will have all the libraries needed to build it.
Go to the directory where you unpacked
Could you then make right click to open the rhythmbox window? Or some
kind of a shortcut. This `only left click` is really annoying.

In version 0.12.5 which was shipped with Karmic, left clicking would
show / hide the main window while right clicking would show a context
menu. This is consistent with the rest of the tray icons in both Karmic
and Lucid; all of them show the context menu on right click, and offer

no it's not, try to left and right click on icons there, some open menus
being the same or different ones, some toggle on left click, some run

Here are the icons I use:
- Date time applet: right click shows help about preferences menu, left
click shows / hides calendar and locations;
- NM applet: right click shows networking options (wired vs. wireless, edit
connections, connection info, about); left click shows / hides connections

So for the next cycle, we can expect right click and middle click
functionality to be removed for all applets! Great! I can hardly wait. I
guess I'll be going back to Fedora, before Ubuntu becomes the next Apple.

during the next cycle you will probably have GNOME and other
distribution deprecating applets and moving to new systems too with
GNOME3 so good luck with whatever distribution you will install

Yeah, I forgot all about GNOME 3 - but that makes the changes in the current
(LTS) release even more pointless.
Anyway - thanks for the prompt replies. I seriously appreciate it.

thank you for your bug report, having those icons behaving in a consistent way
and not having each doing custom ricght or middle click
tasks does make sense and is by design, there are already other bugs about the
show entry which should be a toggle one using a checkbox, closing this bug now
