[Bug 209520] Re: SMB error: Unable to mount location when server configured with security=share
In the end, the explanation for being unable to connect to servers using share-level security is very straightforward. If I configure a samba server here for security=share and connect with smbclient, I see the following: $ smbclient //borges/pub Password: Domain=[DNSG] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.30] Server not using user level security and no password supplied. Server requested LANMAN password (share-level security) but 'client use lanman auth' is disabled tree connect failed: SUCCESS - 0 $ The use of lanman authentication has been disabled on both client and server in Ubuntu 8.04 because it's substantially weaker that NTLM passwords, and therefore more vulnerable to decryption attacks of the network traffic. To be precise, the man page for smb.conf says: This parameter determines whether or not smbclient(8) and other samba client tools will attempt to authenticate itself to servers using the weaker LANMAN password hash. If disabled, only server which support NT password hashes (e.g. Windows NT/2000, Samba, etc... but not Windows 95/98) will be able to be connected from the Samba client. The LANMAN encrypted response is easily broken, due to it’s case- insensitive nature, and the choice of algorithm. Clients without Windows 95/98 servers are advised to disable this option. Disabling this option will also disable the client plaintext auth option I didn't remember that share-level security was restricted to lanman password authentication, but now that I see that, this failure to connect makes sense. It is not accidental that the client refuses to negotiate security in such a situation; I still believe this is the correct default for libsmbclient to use in hardy, because enabling weak authentication in the client doesn't just make it possible to use older servers, it also makes it possible for a man-in-the-middle attacker to trick your client into using weak authentication when trying to talk to a newer server, compromising other passwords in the process. As a workaround, users who need to access security=share servers can add 'client lanman auth = yes' to the [global] section of /etc/samba/smb.conf on their hardy client systems, to enable negotiation of this weak authentication protocol. For nautilus/gvfs, there definitely should be a better feedback mechanism about this problem, so that users get some indication of why the connection has failed. ** Changed in: gvfs (Ubuntu Hardy) Status: New = Triaged -- SMB error: Unable to mount location when server configured with security=share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/209520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 136871] Re: Idle/inactive action/autosuspend results in a suspend AND a hibernate
I see something similar to this on 8.04. I set my preferences to suspend after 1 hour of idle time when on AC. Most of the time (though not always) when it suspends from being idle, when I wake it up, it immediately hibernates. I think that in this case, it is related to how much time passes after the suspend. If it is left overnight, then it always hibernates when awakened, but if I wake it up shortly after the suspend, it seems to resume OK. The only case I have set to 'hibernate' is 'when battery power is critically low'. I see nothing in syslog which indicates why hibernation is being activated. [Bug 240352] [NEW] useless transport control / playlist features
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem TRANSPORT CONTROLS USELESS:: upon playing one single song in totem, there is no possibility to rewind to start, except for the seek-bar. that means the transport controls are useless and only pause play will work. USAGE OF SEEK-BAR FREEZES PLAYBACK:: even the seek bar itself causes totem to freeze playback, if used to rapidly over the mouse wheel. this happens to me with movies and music alike, whether mp3, .wav or whatever other format i tried. SIDEBAR PROBLEMS:: whenever the sidebar is open with the playlist, keyboard shortcuts will not work, because the playlist quick textsearch will grab all input from the keyboard let's face it: to make totem the main media player for the Gnome Desktop Environment is a very shaky move. As long as seeking freezes playback, and the transport controls are disabled for 1-item-only playlists, totem is but a graphical frontend for simple playback with no proper interface. seeking with the mousewheel is a beautiful idea, shortcuts are also good, but only if they work. [Bug 206227] Re: vinagre fails to connect
gtkglext promoted to main. Please reopen if there are still problems with building this. What's the fix in 0.3.6? Can it be backported to hardy? ** Changed in: gtk-vnc (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Committed = Fix Released -- vinagre fails to connect https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/206227 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 206439] Re: smb password protected share cannot be accessed
There might be some details that help shed more light on the situation here: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gvfs-list/2008-May/msg5.html Specifically: - we have username, domain, server and share parameters available to be set into mountspec. However username and domain shouldn't be set unless we really need them. At the moment, non-anonymous mounts have both username and domain set which confuses Nautilus. This causes troubles when user gvfs-mount's smb://server/share but gvfs-ls can't find this location mounted then because it has username and domain set in mountspec. -- smb password protected share cannot be accessed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/206439 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
